Why Singapore rather than another Asian hub

For a French company looking to produce a film in Asia, Singapore offers five decisive advantages over Bangkok, Tokyo or Hong Kong.

  1. Administrative English. All permits, contracts, invoices in English. No language barrier with your fixer.
  2. Legal stability. Singapore law follows the British model, contracts are solid, execution is fast.
  3. Technical infrastructure. Pro studios, European-grade cinema rental, quality local post-production.
  4. Connectivity. Direct daily Paris-Singapore flights, 12-13h flight. 6h time difference in summer — manageable.
  5. Regional position. If you plan several shoots in Southeast Asia, Singapore is the best base to radiate from.

Kyma Production established its Asia studio in Singapore precisely for these reasons. Our co-founder Alex Wee coordinates productions across the whole zone.

Filming permits in Singapore

Singapore is strict but transparent. Here's what to know.

Public location filming

Permit required from Singapore Tourism Board (STB) or Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). Lead time: 2 to 4 weeks. Cost: 100–500 SGD depending on zone and duration. Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa = specific permits.

Private indoor filming

Owner agreement enough for most venues. For hotels (Raffles, Marina Bay Sands): go through events or marketing department, plan 4-6 weeks.

Drones

Mandatory authorisation from Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). Lead time: 4 weeks. Cost: 75 SGD. Wide no-fly zones (airport, ministries, embassies). Pilot must have CAAS licence.

Casting

No mandatory union like in France, but named contracts required. For Singaporean professional actors, rates comparable to Paris (200–800 SGD/day depending on profile).

How much a Singapore shoot costs

Here are ranges observed on recent productions (CNP, Kyma Asia, corporate missions).

ItemRange (€)
Local crew day (3 people: director + DOP + sound)1,800–3,500
Cinema equipment rental (camera + lenses + sound)800–2,500/day
Local fixer (production manager)500–1,200/day
Standard venue rental (hotel, restaurant)400–2,000/day
Professional model casting300–800/day
Administrative permits100–500 total

For a typical project of 2 indoor shoot days with local crew + 1 outdoor day with permit, plan a local budget of €12,000 to €22,000. Excluding crew transport and Paris coordination.

If you want to send a full French crew (recommended for luxury productions), add €6,000 to €12,000 in flights + accommodation + per diem.

Singapore pitfalls to avoid

The Kyma Asia approach: French-Singaporean

For our French clients who want a Singapore shoot, we offer three formats:

Format 1 — Full local production

Kyma Asia crew (Alex Wee + local operators) handles everything. Creative direction validated by video call with Paris. Optimised cost, constraints: consistent creative quality but less "personalised".

Format 2 — Hybrid (our default)

Director + DOP fly from Paris, local crew (assistant, sound, gaffer, fixer) hired by Kyma Asia. Best compromise. It's what we did for CNP in Brazil, and what we propose by default.

Format 3 — Full French crew + Kyma Asia support

For luxury and strategic productions (Dior type), Paris crew fully deployed, Kyma Asia handles only local logistics (permits, transport, rentals). High cost, maximum quality.

The hybrid format is chosen in 70% of cases — best ratio between cost, quality and creative consistency.

Frequently asked questions

How long to prepare a Singapore shoot?
Minimum 4-6 weeks from Paris. CAAS authorisations (drones), STB permits, fixer, venue contracts, crew tickets — all settles in 4-5 weeks. Under 3 weeks strongly discouraged.
Does French taxation change for a Singapore shoot?
For production billed to a French client, no — French VAT applies. For services billed locally in Singapore to a local client: Singaporean regime (GST 9%). Discuss with your accountant.
Can you film at iconic tourist sites (Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay)?
Yes, but permit mandatory and long delays (4-6 weeks). Rates: 300–1,500 SGD depending on zone and duration. For Marina Bay Sands indoors: go through their events department, plan 6-8 weeks.
What's the ideal season to shoot in Singapore?
March to May (dry season) and September to November (between monsoons). Avoid December-February (NE monsoon). June-August: hot but shootable.
Does Kyma also work in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok?
Yes, but via validated local partners. Our Singapore studio remains the Asia coordination hub. For Tokyo notably, we have a partnership with a local studio since 2024.
